Last week at the Salomon Farm Market, I found out about another mill in our area. You
have no idea how much finding out something like this pleases me. Greenfield Mills is
located in Howe, IN which is in LaGrange county. A bit of a drive for some of you, but
well worth it. However, if you check out their web site for stores in your area you will
find a listing for most counties and then cities, with the addresses and phone numbers
of the stores that carry their products. In Ft. Wayne their products can be found here:
Three Rivers Food Co-op, 1612 Sherman Blvd, 424-8812 (carries Pastry Flour
and pancake mixes, "can probably get other items if we ask")
White Swan IGA, 9149 Lima Rd, 489-3612
The Rinkels offer 100 different products, which include many different types of flour,
pancake mixes, cornmeal, batter mixes, popcorn, and homemade noodles.
The mill has an interesting history, check it out on their home page and their about us
page. It was built in 1834 and has been owned by the Rinkel family since 1904, thus
the Rinkel name in their web address www.newrinkelflour.com. I asked the family if their
grains were grown locally, and this is what Amanda wrote. "We try to buy all grain locally,
we purchase grain usually with in a 100 mile radius. Being so close to Michigan and
Ohio, some of our grain comes from there. In the Organic [pastry and pancake flours]
the sources are more limited and come from as far as Missouri and Wisconsin, but we
try to get as much as possible locally. The corn is also from local sources."
Enjoy their products, I am.
