Over 8,000 apple trees offering 26 varieties of apples, now that's mind boggling. Such a little sign for such a huge operation.
Located in Kendallville, IN at 11061 E 415 N (Lisbon Rd), you will find this orchard. As you enter the drive, be sure to avoid the drive and parking lot to your right (its for employees) and instead stay on the drive to your left, park in
the grass and enter the large building straight ahead of you.
Once inside you will find the apples available for sale, bagged and clearly marked by variety and bag weight (3, 5, and 10 pound bags).
I choose a 5 pound bag of Honeycrisp, a variety available September through December at their orchard. They describe theses apples in their brochure as "Extremely large apple with a mottled red- orange color. Very crisp and juicy, this apple has a tangy sweet flavor. Excellent for eating, baking, just about everything. If you haven't tried one, you should!" I had never eaten one of these before, people around me were grabbing up bags of them, so I joined in and have been richly rewarded. Sweet, delicious, jjuicy, unexpected flavors. My husband and I love it. I am going to bake with this apple too, and see what I get.
Right now they have Gala, Golden Supreme, Gold Delicious, Honeycrisp, and many others. Give them a call or go to their website you won't be disappointed. They are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
They also have for sale, all natural apple butter (no sugar added and apples the only ingredient), (I bought this too and it will be part of my breakfast tomorrow), apple syrup, and apple jelly. Apple cider will be available for sure starting Monday (maybe as early as this Saturday, but for sure next week).
This farm, as stated in their brochure, "was established in 1972, (when) there were nine existing orchards in the Kendallville area. These were mostly pick-your-own operations, so Orchard Hill developed a wholesale market with area retailers. In 1995, when the last orchard of the original nine closed, Orchard Hill added their own farm market, offering 26 apple varieties. Also in 1994, a second farm was planted with an experimental block to test newer apple varieties."
